Young Cyclists who would like to take their riding to the next level should get their pen and paper out and put in a submission to the Sydney Metro Cycling Academy. CNSW in conjunction with NSWIS (Cycling) has an ongoing commitment to Athlete’s development through Regional Academy programs to develop and implement pathways for riders from ‘grassroots’ through to high performance international competition. Through this program they are introducing a Junior Development Team

With this commitment comes the formation or reinstatement of Cycle Academy’s to cover all areas of NSW, the latest of which is the newly formed Sydney Metro Cycling Academy (SMCA). Cycling NSW are now calling for Expressions of Interest from male and female juniors being U15 or U17 members as at 1st Oct 2014.

About SMCA
The SMCA Cycling Program is designed to support the developmental needs of young talented cyclists by providing industry leading high performance sport development programs. Scholarships are offered for a 12-month period commencing Oct 2014 combining the track season (Oct – Mar) and the road season (May – Sep 2015).

Athlete Eligibility
To be eligible for a Cycling Scholarship, athletes must:
 Reside within one of the following Council areas –
Botany Bay, Burwood, Canada Bay, Canterbury, Hornsby, Hunters Hill, Hurstville, Kogarah, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Leichhardt, Manly, Marrickville, Mosman, North Sydney, Pittwater, Randwick, Rockdale, Sutherland Shire, City of Sydney, Warringah, Waverley, Willoughby, Woollahra;
 Be a registered member of a cycling club affiliated with NSW cycling;
 Be between the ages of 14 to 17 at the beginning of the scholarship i.e. 1st Oct’14;
 Pay an athlete levy of $450 per athlete to help offset Academy costs
 Attend athlete assessment and testing sessions


Selection Criteria
Athletes must satisfy the eligibility criteria and demonstrate the following qualities;
 Demonstrate through past performance and/or potential, the ability to reach or exceed a top 5 place at NSW Championships within 12 months.
 Physical abilities and physical skills considered to be essential for eventual success in cycling;
 Demonstrate a positive attitude, commitment and dedication to improving performance.
 Display an ability to apply coaching & technical instruction with an ability or potential to work as part of a team to achieve excellence.

If you have a child who may not be at this standard but you would like to start some road racing or perhaps improve their skills, then please contact the club via the contact form. We have a Junior Development Officer that can assist with training and racing. The club also has a number of junior bikes and jerseys that it can lend out to members who’s children would like to race because we realise that children grow up fast and therefore this option gives you the ability to upgrade at no cost as the childrens grow.
