Empire Strikes Back – Return of Cyclo Cross 19 May

Just when you thought you had all the bikes you need and it was safe to go back on the road… the announcement is made- MWCC and MWMTB Cyclo-Cross season is now upon us! The first round is on 19 May at Terrey Hills.
Manly Warringah Cyclo-cross Series, hosted in conjunction with Manly Warringah Cycling Club and Manly Warringah MTB returns for 2013 after the success of the inaugural season.
This fast and furious form of racing is perfect for those who want the class and panache of road riding, with the dirt and off road adventure of mountain biking. Throw in some stair running, carrying your bikes over barriers and you have – cyclo-cross.
Racing will be held at JJ Melbourne Hills Reserve, Kamber Road, Terrey Hills.
We will be holding 3 races on the day. The first race will be Open\any Bike Cyclocross and Womens Cyclocross. You may race your CX, MTB, BMX in this category – we have even had riders on single speed fixed bikes take on the challenge – yet to have a uni-cycle entrant.
The second race will be the kids race on a modified course. This is open to children under 12 and is free to all entrants. Get them off the couch and onto their bikes, when we raced this at last years national series, the kids wanted to keep going around even after their race had finished. I am not sure if the smile on the kids faces was as big as those on their parents.
The third race will be Prestige Cyclocross. You must have a Cyclocross bike to compete in this category. While there are some national standard riders who often toe the line at the start, due to multi lap nature of the course and the way that the entire field splits up from almost the first corner, this is suitable for all riders who have a cyclo-cross bike. Don’t worry you will have plenty of support and still get a max heart rate no matter what standard you thinkyou are.
Race entry will be $10, and a license is required to race. Either a Cycling Australia GOLD Membership or BMX Australia OPEN Membership or MTBA Australia Competition Membership. Day licenses will also be available on the day.The course for the day will be designed by our very own Rob Parbery, and will be a stunner as usual! Rob designed the course for the two NSW rounds of the 2012 National Series.
The day’s racing will run as follows;
9.30 – Rego open and course practice.
10.00 – Open\Any Bike CX & Women’s CX 25 minutes
10.40 – Kids Race – 10 minutes on a modified course
10.50 – 11.10 – Course Practice
11.15 – Prestige CX – 40 Minutes
12pm Presentation
Bring your friends and family to what will be a fine morning of racing. It is fast and furious and a great addition to your bike collection. Your commuter bike may actually be a cyclo cross bike in disguise. So spread the word and feel the adreline rush.
Time to get cross!!

I have heard rumor of 1 or 2 club members hunting for new CX bikes from the fixed wheel in time to race on Sunday…..

Could you plesae confirm if your club is hosting the cylocross racing on the weekend of the 13th and 14th July(National Series)
If yes will there be the equivalent of a mens B grade race or Vets race? Im 42 and a member of Port Adelaide Cycling club

Hi Luke, MWCC will be holding the Nationals on that weekend. Last year we did have a B grade race as a prelude to the main event. I expect that we will be doing the same this year with B grade mens and women’s race prior to the Nats.

If anyone is looking for a CX bike, I have one for sale. It’s a Boardman CX Comp, which I’ve upgraded to 20 speed with 105 levers (the stock Sora ones were rubbish) and put on a 105-equivalent CX specific chainset. Smooth-weld alu frame with a tapered steerer and BB5 disc brakes. Hardly ridden (just a few commutes) and never off road in anger. I’m looking for $750.

I should have added that the frame size is a small – I’m 5’8″ and it fits me perfectly (I ride a 54cm road bike).
