The hordes of the great unwashed will be crossing over to the Northern Beaches for round two of the Battle of the Bridge. The series pitting MWCC against Northern Sydney, Sydney Uni and Randwick Botany moves from the badlands of Heffron Park and into the hills of West Head. July 10 will decide who controls the higher ground.
The first round saw large numbers descend on Heffron Park and we were able to gather information as to what the strengths and weaknesses were of the various clubs to launch our successful assault on them at West Head. It will require discipline and patience from our riders to ensure that we conquer every grade and sit atop the leader board after this round. We have the home ground advantage and we need to use it to our advantage.
Randwick Botany are going to be desperate given their lack of success at Heffron Park and the view from many in the cycling community that they are the battlers within this set, so they will need to go on the attack and can’t afford to wait for a lucky dip sprint finish. Northern Sydney felt like they had asserted dominance at Heffron Park but the reality is that their palmares at West Head are relatively short and they have no real proven performers on this course. Sydney Uni will be coming in thinking that they are the Team Sky of Sydney racing, but remove Jesse Coyle from the equation and the cupboards may be a little bare come race day.
For the races we will be running the following grades and times:
A Grade – 3 laps circa 65km 7:45am roll out
B Grade – 3 laps circa 65km 7:50am
C Grade – 2 laps circa 45km 7:55am
D Grade – 2 laps circa 45km 8:00am
Women’s – 2 laps circa 45km 8:05am
Many riders who would have previously ridden in ‘C Coffee’ can either extend themselves in C grade or race in D grade. All riders who usually race in A Club or A Elite are expected to race in A grade.
Riders can enter via www.trybooking.com/MAPT if they did not purchase a Battle of the Bridge Season Pass. If you purchased a Battle of the Bridge Season Pass you do not need to re-enter.
Riders from other clubs should note that normal racing will resume August 14.
All riders can sign on at Elvina Walking Track Car Park from 7:15am. If you choose to drive into the Park and park on West Head Road, please note that you will be under a controlled and restricted road until the race has finished.
The race course starts at Elvina Walking Track, riders will roll out and head south back towards Akuna Bay, however rather than turn at the junction, riders will turn at the crest of the hill and then make their way out to the usual turn around point.
The entry fee is $20 for Racing Licence riders.
We encourage all riders to read our article on racing safely – https://manlywarringahcc.org.au/article/racing-for-the-win-safely/#more-1945
Our races have a history of being incident free and we want to maintain that record. Remember that you are in control of your front wheel. Keep your brain switched on.
ALL GRADES RACE FROM THE ROLL OUT, THERE IS NO NEUTRAL SECTION
All riders must show a current 2016 Racing Licence or purchase a One Day Racing Licence and an approved Australian Standards Helmet at the sign on.
Our Subaru Road Race will be signing on from 7:15am for all grades at the Elvina Walking Track Carpark. If you pre enter please ensure you arrive at a minimum 10 minutes before your race start.
If you haven’t raced before but are considering it – our guide to entering may be of some assistance. https://manlywarringahcc.org.au/news/racing-how-to-enter-and-what-to-expect-a-beginners-guide/
Our prestigious road race can send your heart rate rocketing from the roll out, so we do encourage riders to be warmed up and recommend that you consider parking around Terrey Hills and riding into the park, to ensure that you have had a good warm up prior to race start. Please be cautious on the descent down into the Park.
The start/finish line and presentation area is located at the Elvina Walking Track Car park on West Head Road.
We would request that you do not park in the Elvina Walking Track car park – this not only assists our marshalls when they head up there to set up for the finish, but also assists with our relations with the National Parks. This also gives riders more room to hang around in post race.
